Key intuition: tokenised treasury = money market fund + blockchain settlement. The yield is ordinary and comes from bills. What is new is how the claim moves — and that is where the new risks are too.
2 · BeginnerWhat is it, really?

A tokenised treasury is a fund holding short-dated government bills, where your holding is recorded as a blockchain token rather than as an entry in a transfer agent's register.

Separating the two layers makes the product easy to judge:

  • The asset layer is entirely conventional: T-bills or repo, held by a custodian, managed by a regulated manager. This is where the yield comes from, and it is the same yield a money market fund pays.
  • The token layer is the innovation: ownership transfers in seconds, at any hour, without a settlement cycle, and the token can be used as collateral inside on-chain systems.

The natural user is someone who already operates on-chain and holds idle stablecoins earning nothing. A major stablecoin issuer keeps the interest on its reserves; a tokenised treasury passes it to the holder. That is the entire commercial proposition, and it is a good one.

The structural questions that matter

  • What does the token actually represent? A share in a regulated fund, a note issued by a company, or a claim on an SPV — three very different positions in an insolvency, exactly as with tracker certificates.
  • Who holds the bills, and where? A regulated custodian with segregated accounts, or the issuer's own balance sheet. This is the question FTX settled for the whole industry.
  • How does redemption work under stress? Tokens transfer instantly; T-bills settle on a business-day cycle. That mismatch is the product's central design tension, and it is not solvable by better software.
  • Transfer restrictions. Most tokens are permissioned — only whitelisted addresses can hold them. This makes them compliant and considerably less composable than the marketing suggests.
Worked example: $10m in a tokenised bill fund yielding 4.8% gross with a 0.20% fee nets roughly $460,000 a year against zero on the equivalent stablecoin balance. The comparison is genuinely compelling — the analysis is entirely about whether the custody and legal structure are what they claim.

The liquidity mismatch, stated precisely

The token promises instant transferability. The underlying settles T+1 at best, and selling bills into a stressed market takes a haircut. The gap is bridged by a liquidity buffer and, on secondary markets, by whatever price a buyer will pay:

  • In calm markets both discounts are near zero and the token trades at NAV. In a stress they are not independent — the same event that makes redemption slow makes people doubt the structure.
  • This is the same run dynamic that has repeatedly hit prime money market funds, on an infrastructure that settles far faster than the assets do. The speed advantage is symmetric: exits are faster too.

Where the genuine risk actually sits

  • Smart contract risk. The token is code. Bugs and upgrade keys are real exposures, and an audit is evidence rather than proof.
  • Oracle and NAV publication. Something off-chain must tell the chain what the fund is worth. That link is a trusted component in a system marketed as trustless.
  • Bridge risk. Tokens spanning multiple chains inherit bridge security, historically the single largest source of losses in the sector.
  • Concentration. A small number of managers hold most of the assets, and their operational quality is the sector's real risk profile.

Why this matters beyond crypto

Tokenised treasuries are the first case where blockchain settlement is applied to an asset whose risks are already well understood, which makes them a clean test of a much larger claim: that atomic, 24/7 delivery-versus-payment is worth the operational cost. Traditional settlement carries days of counterparty exposure and enormous reconciliation overhead — genuine problems this addresses. Whether it is the best solution to them is unresolved, and central-bank and commercial-bank experiments are running in parallel.

The formulas above are standard textbook formulations, simplified for teaching. They explain the mechanism — they are not a valuation tool, and they will not reproduce a dealer’s price.

Practitioner note: read the offering document, not the dashboard. The yield is a T-bill yield and needs no analysis. Everything worth analysing is in custody, the legal claim, and what happens when many holders redeem on a day the bill market is not cooperating.
